I don't know if this is directly related. One article in the New York Times was about a teenager who defied her parents' wish for the planned fixed marriage. She has a boyfriend against the wishes of her parents and that's enough reason to send her to the gallows, so to speak, because of the shame she brought to her family. But fortunately, the teenager was quick enough to escape the gang who would rape her. I felt like reading a fairy tale where the parents left their daughter to the mercy of the wolves. And some of those in the gang to rape her were his cousins. And after the rape, there is a high probability that she would be murdered - to totally erase the shame in the family.

The culmination of the story is the successful escape of the teenager and her boyfriend to another country. I forgot to mention that they are Muslims.

SICK! I'm usually one that tries to respect cultures of other countries and not just think that the Western world is right and everybody is wrong but these kinds of things are wrong no matter what. It's gone too far.

Yes, there are cultures where arranged marriage is normal but if you disagree you don't get gang raped and killed.

Glad this couple escaped but many don't.

To a certain point, yes I agree. Have to abide by the laws.

I don't know much about arranged marriages. But I worked with an East Indian woman (she liked me and stated I looked like and reminded her of her mother who had passed away. And I'm white) who told me about her arranged marriage. They were both about 24 at the time. Met 10 or 12 times always chaperoned. Both of them were very good looking. But she told me she was In no way forced and if she didn't want to, she didn't have to marry him. And she did.

Yes, not every thing is a horror story, that's why I respect other cultures and their ways to a certain point.

I'm sure many arranged marriages worked better than some that weren't arranged.
